School is out and summer is here ready for us to have fun, relax and enjoy the days. Whether you go for a walk, hike, bike ride, beach going, camping, park adventures with family and friends, or even staying at home there is one thing that often gets lost in all the fun…..self-awareness. Self-awareness comes in many forms and here are just a few very important tips to keep us safe this summer and all year round
Self-awareness can also be known as situational awareness. Be familiar with your surroundings to avoid potentially dangerous situations. For example, when you are taking a walk or on a bike ride look around at all times to make sure you are not being followed by someone unfamiliar to you, the area you are in is safe, and stay alert. Also, try to walk or bike with another person or a group of people. This sounds very simple, but this is when our guard comes down and we become a target.
Self-awareness can also come in the simple form of personal safety. One of the first things we think about when we talk personal safety is probably self-defense. Our martial arts students all know and have trained in class on self-defense and how important it is for our safety. Remember it is known that since many attackers choose their victims who will be most vulnerable, it is so critical that you appear confident, capable and in control at all times.
Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t look or feel right, it probably won’t be. Happy summer and stay safe!
